Guess what colour?! Opps, I guess I've already split the beans in the title. HEHE

Guess what colour?! :D

My hair had been pretty virgin, like extra virgin HEHE. Though I threaten to snip/shave my hair every now and then, I must add admit that its a blessing in the genes to have "OK" hair*.
*"OK" meaning that it received a few compliments from people. Not leaving out the fact that it is actually considerably manageable.

My hair had been the most low maintenance thing on myself, all my life. LIKE WHAT YOU MEAN?! Other than not being dyed; it has also never been permed/ rebonded, not even hair straighteners/curlers touched a single strand. In addition to that, a hairdresser does nothing more than to cut my hair; no washes or any other fancy treatments that the salon offers a myriad of. All my hair had to itself was shampoo, a weekly monthly use of hair conditioner and blow drying. To add salt to the wound, my mane is ripped off a breather and strangled by a hair band on a daily basis. HAHA Sounds like I'm totally so not deserving to own good hair, right?! *shrugs* HAHAHAA!

Yeah, that's quite enough of your boasting.. Then why did you decide to dye your hair?!

I've never quite understand why do people even dye their hair, results from Google aren't exactly satisfactory either. I'm referring to the hair dyes that change your colour, not to conceal your grays. Best results from Google? "Hair color as the single most effective way to transform a woman's look sans cosmetic surgery." Okay... but it was still something that I couldn't really contemplate.

Typically our hair becomes more pigmented as we get older, say an ashy brown would have darkened to a dark coffee brown when we get out of our childhood; blonde to brown and so on. Young women are unconsciously more desired especially from an evolutionary perspective that they tend to be healthier which is a crucial indicator for physical attractiveness.

Hair colouring/lightening probably acts an alternative means for women to advertise their youth. This is the sole reason why you see many Asian girls lightening their hair; most of the time to one that is 2-3 shades lighter than their original hair colour.

HAHAHA Has this cleared your doubts? I KNOW RIGHT?! Sometimes I think they look the same lor...

Other than that, hair colours can potentially also make your hair look healthier, shinier and softer, on top of complementing skin tones or outfits.

My (Extra) Virgin Hair

My natural hair was dark brown, it lightens a few shades with the scorching sun. Nothing special or extraordinary about it, it was a shade that almost every brand of hair dye can replicate with ease. I believe it has red undertone like what most brown/black hair does.

This reminds me of the time when I was in primary/secondary school when some schoolmates will be bragging about their au naturel hair colour. "My hair is brown, not black."

Uhm, okay. So is my hair.

Revlon hair dyes are probably the cheapest in the market, at least in Singapore. I picked this from a local Valu$ (Value Dollar) Store at S$5.90! If you live in the US you can probably get it at as low as US$2.50 with some coupons. I was thrilled to get it for my mom (yes, this was originally meant for my mom), especially when I read that Revlon promises 100% gray coverage in a consumer research study. The same study also showed that Revlon also took top honours for being fade resistant and smell-free while offering up to 40 shades for hair colouring.

It was a shade casually picked out as my mom has some white showing on her roots and is a frequent hair dyer. Then the question of me using the dye myself on myself returns. To clarify, this decision wasn't a temptation, I wanted to experiment firsthand how a different hair colour will make me feel different.

  • Ammonia-free

Made in USA

The kit consists of these things: Nourishing Hair Color Conditioner; Ammonia free colorant; Cream Color Developer; Gloves; Instruction Manual. The packaging is frills free and minimalistic, you don't get designer applicators or fancy gloves; what you need is what you get.

Things to note before hair dying,

  1. Do not wash your hair 24 hours before application of the dye.
  2. This product contains ingredients which may cause skin irritation on certain individuals and a patch test should first be done.
  3. Two boxes of dye is recommend for hair that's shoulder length or longer.

Directions

1. Mix the colorant and cream color developer. And shake well.

Is more budget required to make the bottle transparent? I had to open to peek at the mixture in attempt to recognise any reaction that is going on. The reaction definitely heated the bottle up, and some gas is also produced. I sniff hydrogen peroxide and alcohol in the air. Also, please dispose of the excess; the bottle may burst (unless a splatter of artistic dye is what you're going for).

No leh, it wasn't brown. A thick cream with dark purplish hue is resulted.
I transferred the cream into a plastic container for easy scooping
2. Before application of the hair dye, smear petroleum jelly (Vaseline) onto your hairline; including the nape of your neck, behind your ears etc to prevent staining.

Other misc items you may need.
3. Part your hair into 4 sections. Apply the hair dye evenly starting from the lower sections, working from the root to its ends. For touchups, only apply the dye on your roots. Use either with a colouring brush or a comb with large gaps between its teeth. Remember to wear the plastic gloves provided! The colour was a little unsettling.

4. Leave the dye on.

  • If it is your first time coloring your hair, leave the hair solution for 25 minutes.
  • For touch-ups, leave the mixture on for 20 minutes.
  • For resistant gray hair, leave on for additional 5 minutes. (Total 30 minutes)
My scalp did feel a little sore as I suppose I'm guilty of washing my hair? HAHA This wasn't exactly planned you know. I would be lying if I just brushed off the smell part, it definitely reeks of chemicals. I was inhaling the vapour of hydrogen peroxide; but it was honestly not that bad. I was pretty much used to the smell from my mom's "beauty days" and that this wasn't the worst smelling one.

5. After the waiting period, rinse hair with warm water until the water runs clear.

At this point, my hair was still bleeding purple. It was only after the second wash (after conditioning) when some of the dye oxidised to reddish brown.

6. Apply the nourishing conditioner and leave it on for 2 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Now I can totally put myself at the shoes of the other cosmetic junkies who raved and showered this conditioner with praises. I wish they could sell it individually too! My hair instantly feels like what it was before dyeing, if not softer! I left the conditioner on longer, it instantly separates and smooths out my untamed mane.

Day 1

Immediately after dyeing and washing
HAHA My hair was still uhm, wet.
Day 2

2nd day- No shampooing, just rinsing with water

I did not shampoo my hair for 2 days, only rinsing with warm water. There wasn't any noticeable bleeding during the showers.

Day 3

I shampooed my hair in the morning, brown pigments lurked the waters. After conditioning, the water still leaked a little of brown. I continued rinsing until it runs clear.

The hair colour is even and it did not stain my scalp. I only used one box for my hair length. I had no extras though HEHE. You can also experiment with mixing boxes of different colours for multi-dimensions. My hair feels softer as well, kudos to the conditioner. I have dark hair to begin with so the resulting colour is not exactly true to that shade on the box

I guess I don't look too different. HAHA In fact no one except my little sister noticed that I'm now sporting auburn hair. But what I do like about this shade is that it adds a little more red and copper tones to my otherwise dull hair. My hair does look red (okay, maybe orange) under direct sunlight now! Though red tones are a tough color to maintain, it will make my hair look just a tad softer and brighten up my complexion in its days of presence.

Thinking about changing your looks for the new year as well? I couldn't be happier with Colorsilk and I'm more than enthusiatic to recommend this to anyone who is looking for a cheap alternative to salon visits.
Bye!
