Your search for the perfect sunscreen is over.

We all know that sun protection is important, especially in Singapore where the UV index is higher than 11 most of the day. Honestly, I don’t think Southeast Asians even check the UV index at all. It is definitely shocking that more than 65% of Singaporean women do NOT wear sunscreen on a daily basis.  Source: Kao Benchmark Survey, 2010 – 2014.
Which is little wonder since most sunscreens are oily, sticky and leaves the face with an embarrassing white cast or reflective sheen. Repeat that to a greasy-faced teen, suffering from acne.

While most sunscreen designed for a day under the sun are waterproof and offers adequate protection, they are often greasy and too heavy for daily useWhich, is the top reason of people deferring sunscreen usage. On top of that, they also smell waxy and are too chalky. Remember those times when you scratch yourself and find white chalk underneath your fingernails? Ugh.

Biore is almost akin to a household brand in Singapore, under the Kao Corporation. You see Biore cleansing foam, lotions, and of course their sunscreen. Biore UV is the No.1 sunscreen brand in Japan, and it’s all for good reason. Have you ever tried a matte sunscreen?

The Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel boosts a high SPF of 50+ and PA++++, providing both UVA and UVB protectionUVB (B for Burns) rays causes sunburns and tans, which is not that bad if you’re really into that bronzed look, plus the ozone layer filters out some of them anyway. But UVA (A for Ageing), penetrates into the dermis and is responsible for premature aging and cause deeper damage such as freckles or skin cancerSunscreen is the most formidable weapon that any of us can have in our anti-ageing arsenal.

This chemical sunscreen has a water-based formula which promises non-sticky, non-greasy and does not leave a white castThe texture is watery and light. It comes out of the tube as gel with solid white precipitate and it melts to become like a watery-consistency.

It has now become a delight to apply sunscreen.  It is cooling, with a refreshing citrus scent. It spreads easily, dries fast and does not dry out the skin. And the best catch of it all is that it leaves a matte finish. What does that mean? While offering sun protection, it also doubles as a makeup base.  I apply this at the end of my skincare routine and before any makeup.
As a makeup base, it seems to extend the lifespan of any BB cream by a few hours.

The Biore UV Aqua Watery Gel contains moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and citrus extract to keep the skin soft.
  • Hyaluronic acid is highly popular in Asian skincare. It can hold up to 1,000X of its weight in water and maintain the water content in the skin
  • Citrus extract is rich in Vitamin C, an antioxidant that brightens the skin and has anti-inflammatory properties.

However, sunscreens are NOT designed to replace your good old moisturizer, this is especially so if you have dry skin.

While the antioxidant part is great, I’m however not too sure if the addition of Vitamin C is beneficial as they tend to breakdown with exposure to light and heat.
Alcohol is also an ingredient quite high up the ingredient list, however this product claims to be gentle for all skin types, including sensitive skin. The alcohol scent is light at the beginning of application, but quickly dissipates as its citrus scent took over.  Apart from the smell, I haven’t experienced any irritation or breakouts from daily usage of this product.

This tube of sunscreen is pretty affordable as well, and that’s great news for everyone. Regular sunscreen users  go through sunscreen like water, and the expensive ones don't seem to be too sustainable. While I’m confident that I’ll repurchase this product, I’m equally excited to try out other sun protection products that Biore offers. (Prior to receiving this product for review, I’ve also bought another product of this line – Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence. )

Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel retails at S$18.90 for a 90 ml bottle. Available at all leading pharmacies, super & hyper markets, departmental stores, beauty stores and selected minimarts.
