[Skincare] Depressed Acne Scars- Review: Hiruscar PostAcne

Acne has left my life different, and I believe that many who went through moderate to severe acne can understand. The trauma is not over afterwards however, they leave permanent deep scars which will potentially stay with you for life.

Scars, unlike marks are permanent. Marks left by acne are just brown pigmentation due to the production of melanin. These will usually go away with time as new skin cells from the dermis migrate upwards to replace the old skin cells. However, scars are different. Scars can be a change in texture such as becoming depressed or raised as a result from the difference in collagen type and weaving. Although our skin renew itself every 28 days, but the scars happen deep in the skin and remain there.

There are definitely many scars treatments available now, and I certainly would recommend other options first before laser due to its potential complications. Depending on the type of scars you have, there are many options such as chemical peels, dermabrasion, surgery and even creams or gels. While shown varying degrees of success, results from the traditional scar treatments may be unreliable and unpredicable. (Source)

Hiruscar is one that claims may improve the appearance of scars to some extent.

Hiruscar PostAcne is anti-bacterial and prevents the recurrence of inflammations.

The Hiruscar PostAcne gel is packaged in a convenient squeeze tube which dispenses a small volume of product at a time. It is definitely more preferred when the product is less exposed to air in case of contamination.

The Hiruscar post-acne gel is clear, and has a slightly stronger "onion" (Allium Cepa) smell compared to the original Hiruscar gel. It is fast-absorbing and is also suitable for application under makeup.

The Hiruscar post-acne gel is clear and absorbs fast into the skin upon light massaging. It is also suitable for oily and acne-prone skin. It should be used at the end of the skincare routine and before makeup. It is recommended to apply 2-3 times a day, in the morning and before bedtime.

Baby Powder Test:

Baby powder is dabbed onto the back of my hands where I've tested the product to show that the Hiruscar post-acne gel is not sticky. Hiruscar PostAcne is unlikely to cake up your makeup.

Baby powder - to show that the gel did not leave any sticky residues behind.

Ingredients:

IngredientsAqua, Allium Cepa Bulb Extract, Niacinamide, Sorbeth-30, PPG-26-Buteth-26 and PEG-40hydrogenated caster oil, Quaternium-73, Carbomer, Fragrance, Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate and DMDM hydantoin, Sodium Hydroxide, Allantoin and Mucopolysaccharide (MPS).

Allium Cepa (Onion Extract)

Allium Cepa has been shown in many scientific studies to reduce the formation of new scars and improve the appearance of existing scars. Allium Cepa contains several unique bioflavenoids, such as quercitin, kaempferol, and cepalin; metalloproteinases; and thiosulfates. (Source) This ingredient is also present in other scar gels such as Mederma. A study on rabbit ears showed improved dermal collagen organization, potentially reducing the degree of scar formation.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

This form of Vitamin B3 has been shown to improve elasticity and water content in the skin as well as stimulating microcirculation in the dermis. Studies have also shown that niacinamide provides improvements in the appearance of aging skin, including skin discolourations, red blotchiness and reduce acne. (Source)

Mucopolysaccharide Polysulphate (MPS)

MPS is traditionally used as anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic agent. It is proposed that topical MPS is similar to the body's own mucopolysaccharides and effectively leads to the hydration of the skin by binding to water. Also, studies have found that it stimulates the skin's synthesis of hyaluronic acid, which retains moisture in the skin. (Source)

Alantonin

Alantonin is a product of purine conversion and is naturally found in the urine of mammals (except for humans and primates). Because of its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to soothe skin irritation, it is also present in many creams and ointments including diaper rash. In skincare, it softens keratin on the skin, allowing it to be more hydratedA study on rats has showed an improvement in wound healing, and indicates that it will accelerate the recovery of normal skin

Although exciting, MPS and alantonin are only present in very low concentrations (even lower than fragrance and pH adjuster- sodium hydroxide). And that most effects are likely to be expected out of Allium Cepa and Niacinamide.

Results

I've been applying the Hiruscar Post-acne on both my depressed scars and acne marks for the past month to test it out, twice daily. Okay, I'd admit that I'm not too consistent with application when I forget about it. But I do see clear results in the acne marks. Acne marks usually diminish completely after a month, but with Hiruscar, the skin is lighter in a week

There has been less reviews on documented efficiency on depressed scars. While the scars were not raised dramatically, the edges of the box-car scars are a little more smoother. And they are slightly less notice-able without the harsh edges. I hate to say, but these scars are old. And we all know that more mature scars are harder to treat. I'll give this more time for a more conclusive result.

Hiruscar is currently retailing in Watsons, Guardian, Unity, Independent Pharmacies and Polyclinics for $22.90/ 10ml.
While I do find it slightly on the pricier side, it is worth a try before more aggressive scar treatments. And I'm certain that it'll do a huge improvement to post-acne marks.

The Cult of Beauty

I've had severe acne that had left me with many indented, depressed scars. I still look at the mirror and wish that I could reverse time to prevent the acne-episode. I've became less social and get conscious when people are near to me when I was younger. Nobody seems to be talking about it. People underestimate the effect on the change of appearance on mental health. And sufferers feel ashamed to admit that a harmless skin imperfection is destroying their lives.
I wouldn't know for sure if I would be a different person if this episode didn't happen to me, but the scars have became a part of me as I grew older. And afterall, "the people that matter don't mind".

The culture of being "perfect" in the era of Instagram filters and photo editing app is really distressing for many. The cult of beauty is ridiculous, but many fall for it subconsciously anyway. As we scroll through our social media feeds with beautiful people with perfect skin and body, it is drilled into our minds that beauty is defined as such.

My scars show up in bad lighting and shiny skin.

We can enjoy being in our own skin without the need to strive for extreme perfection.
Remember that you're beautiful. Even before I told you so.
